The city on the southern edge of the destroyed Palestinian enclave is home to more than half of Gaza's 2.3 million residents.

Israeli offensive attack on the southern city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip will make it “very difficult” to maintain peace in the region due to the likely high number of civilian casualties.

This was announced on Sunday, March 17, by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz after negotiations with King Abdullah of Jordan, reports Reuters.

“Israel has every right to defend itself… At the same time, it cannot be that those who fled to Rafah in Gaza are under direct threat due to military actions and operations that are planned to be carried out there,” – he stressed.

The city on the southern edge of the destroyed Palestinian enclave is home to more than half of Gaza's 2.3 million residents.

At the same time, Israel claims that Rafah is one of the last Hamas strongholds, which it has promised to eliminate and has assured that civilians will be evacuated.

Scholz did not directly answer the question of whether Germany would respond to a large-scale offensive on Rafah by, for example, limiting German arms exports to Israel.

At the same time, the German Chancellor assured that the need to preserve the lives of civilians will be one of the main arguments in negotiations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which he will hold later on Sunday during his trip to the region.< /p>

Scholz said his talks with King Abdullah once again made it clear how important it is that all agreements address the long-term prospects for a possible peaceful coexistence between Israel and a Palestinian state.

Recall that Israel intends to continue its invasion of the city of Rafah on the southern border of the Gaza Strip, despite the US reservation against escalating the conflict.
