Scandal with exhibition in Poland: Warsaw set up stands with military personnel of the Ukrainian Armed Forces without faces

The Ukrainian community in Poland believes that the exhibition disdains the memory of fallen soldiers

An installation with photographs of Ukrainian servicemen was opened in the capital of Poland, which caused criticism among Ukrainian society.

It was installed in the center of Warsaw near the new Museum of Modern Art, Warszawa Life reports.

The exhibition, called “Heroes' Alley”, is based on posters with photographs of fallen defenders. Their faces were cut out so that visitors could insert their own faces and take a photo, writes In Poland.

Each poster depicts the years of life and death of the defenders and the captions Become a Hero, Become a Heroine. The Ukrainian community in Poland said that such an approach to perpetuating the memory of fallen soldiers is unacceptable and disdainful. In particular, this installation creates a risk of incorrect use of photographs of the dead, in particular for creating humorous or inappropriate photos.

This installation caused indignation and negative comments on social networks.

The exhibition was presented by three posters of rather low quality, including those depicting living soldiers, writes Radio Track.

It is worth noting that the page of the organizers of the installation “Open Crisis Workshop” on the social network Instagram looks like a newly created account with hastily published photographs. There they stated that in this way they pursued the goal of drawing attention to the war in Ukraine and the heroism of the defenders.

“The act of inserting a face into a hole is an ambiguous and provocative gesture. The slogan “Become a hero/heroine!” hints at the ease of accepting a heroic fate, but at the same time raises questions about the authenticity of such a position. The work also critically reflects on the social and media exploitation of heroism, showing how it becomes instrumentalized and subordinated to certain narratives,” the installation's organizers noted

However, after criticism and indignation, the installation's organizers publicly apologized and removed the exhibition.

“We sincerely apologize for offending your feelings. Of course, this was not our goal. On the contrary, we sought to draw attention to the enormous self-sacrifice that the struggle for the freedom of Ukraine requires, and because of it, Poland,” the page says. creators of the exhibition in the social network.
