The space agency photo shows phytoplankton spreading in the Atlantic Ocean, taken on November 21, 2022 using the MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite.
NASA wanted to show “bright colors illuminating the ocean” with this photo caused by huge populations of microscopic plant-like organisms. In all likelihood, the signature was made inadvertently, but by designating the Malvinas Islands, located in the southern Atlantic Ocean, as “off the coast”, NASA unwittingly joined the feud over the sovereignty of the islands.
