The university promised the attacking activist "legal" answer.
A pro-Palestinian student threw water in the face of the President of the Free University of Berlin, Günther Ziegler, a German mathematician and author of the world bestseller “Proofs from the Book” .
BILD writes about this.
The incident occurred during a discussion with pro-Palestinian students on Thursday, July 11th. According to German media reports, the university itself invited students to take part in the event, but during the discussion, one of them turned on a video recording on his phone and began shouting at the professor. Then the student approached the professor sitting at the table and poured water on him.
In the video, the student can be heard shouting “wake up from the genocide, wake up from your genocide,” and then begins to “calm down” the professor, assuring him that he doused him with “not pepper spray.”
After the incident, the Free University issued an official statement in which it called the student’s actions “unacceptable.” The statement also said the university will take “legal action” against the attacker.
“For weeks, these students have been threatening not only their Jewish classmates, but also university presidents. The fact that professors have protected these students in the past shows the level of tolerance for left-wing extremist and Islamist ideologists that reigns in our educational institutions,” Noam Petry, vice president of the Jewish Student Union of Germany, told reporters after the incident.
A video of the incident was published on Instagram by the account “Independent Students of the Free University of Berlin for a Liberated Palestine.”
The students accuse the university president of supporting the genocide of Palestinians by Israel and the repression of pro-Palestinian activists. They launched a corresponding petition demanding Ziegler's resignation. The caption to the video claims that the petition has already collected more than 2,500 signatures.
Earlier this week, about 30 students at the Free University of Berlin took over one of the lecture halls and refused to leave it. They demanded that the school's management stop all cooperation with Israeli universities. As a result, police officers entered the room and removed the protesters. 27 of them are under investigation for illegally entering the university grounds.
Recall that a scandal has erupted at Harvard over support for Palestine. Harvard student organizations issued an anti-Israeli statement and may now be blacklisted.
