Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that the republic is not going to join NATO, as it is prohibited by the country's constitution, she told about this on the air of the Pro TV channel.

As noted by the politician, no one plans to change the basic law, and the constitution of the state excludes joining the North Atlantic Alliance. “It is written that we are a neutral country, no one has changed the constitution, there are no such initiatives, we do not pose any military threat to anyone, we want the situation to develop peacefully,” the head of state emphasized.

Despite its neutral status, since 1994 Moldova has been cooperating with NATO within the framework of an individual partnership plan. An information center of the alliance operates in Chisinau. In December 2017, a NATO liaison office was opened in the capital.

A poll conducted in July 2021 showed that more than half of Moldovan citizens do not support the country's accession to NATO. 52.7 percent of citizens answered that they refused to support Moldova's entry into the North Atlantic Alliance.
