Sanctions against Russia: Australia hits Putin's wallets, and Japan hits the Russian defense industry

Two large states of the world have expanded the anti-Russian sanctions list.

On Friday, March 18, the Australian authorities additionally imposed sanctions against two Russian oligarchs who own assets and shares of Australian companies, as well as against 11 Russian banks. At the same time, Japan expanded its sanctions list to include 15 representatives of Russian ministries and 9 state-owned companies and organizations. The reason is the same – the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to the official website of the Australian Foreign Ministry, the Australian government continues to increase sanctions pressure on oligarchs close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In addition to the 41 oligarchs and their immediate family members who were previously subject to targeted financial sanctions and travel bans, Australia has added two billionaires with business interests in Australia, Oleg Deripaska and Viktor Vekselberg.

Sanctions were also imposed on 11 Russian banks, which together account for approximately 80% of all banking assets in Russia, including Sberbank, Gazprombank, VEB, VTB, Rosselkhozbank, Sovcombank, Novikombank , Alfa-Bank, and the Credit Bank of Moscow.

The Japanese government has expanded the sanctions list by adding 15 representatives of Russian ministries to it. Among other things, restrictions were applied to eight Deputy Ministers of Defense of the Russian Federation, the head of the military intelligence service of the GRU and the press secretary of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

In addition, the sanctions will affect state-owned companies and organizations in the Russian defense sector. In particular, Rosoboronexport, Russian Helicopters and the United Aircraft Corporation fell under the sanctions. The sanctions include asset freezes and transaction bans.

Recall that the New Zealand government has announced new sanctions against Russia in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
