Samsung will transform old smartphones into IoT devices

Samsung, as part of the Galaxy Upcycling initiative, has proposed a new use case for old smartphones as home IoT devices.

Galaxy Upcycling at Home transforms legacy Galaxy phones into home devices. Updating the software helps to increase the life of the smartphone without recharging, so that the gadget can act as a noise sensor or light sensor.

According to the South Korean electronics manufacturer, smartphones will be able to more accurately recognize various sounds and react to light after a software update. For example, if the device detects a baby crying, a dog barking, a cat meowing or a knock on the door, the user will receive a notification and sound recording. In addition, the smartphone is able to fix the level of light in the room and automatically turn on the light or TV. In the future, old Samsung Galaxy gadgets will be able to control any electronics in the proprietary Samsung SmartThings ecosystem.

Galaxy Upcycling at Home is being beta tested in the US, UK and South Korea. The owners of any smartphones of the S, Note and Z lines, released not earlier than 2018 and running on an operating system not lower than Android 9, will be able to participate in the project.

Recall that the Galaxy Upcycling initiative is designed to reduce the amount of waste from old electronics. To this end, Samsung offers users of outdated smartphones new options for using devices in everyday life and professional activity.
