SakhSU and the NTI Competence Center at IPCP RAS will open a new laboratory

The decision to provide a subsidy from the federal budget to finance the creation and operation of the Laboratory of Electrochemical Sources for Renewable Energy on the basis of SakhSU was signed by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation on September 20, 2021. The selection took place within the framework of the competition of the national project “Science and Universities” for the creation of new laboratories, including under the leadership of young scientists, according to a press release received by the editors.

The creation of the laboratory is due to the fact that the production and use of hydrogen is one of the strategic priorities of the scientific and technological development of the Sakhalin Oblast, which has become a pilot region in hydrogen energy. The region's goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2024, as well as to create pilot projects in the field of hydrogen energy and transport. Already, work has begun on such projects as the Sakhalin Hydrogen Cluster, the Rusatom Overseas hydrogen production plant and AirLiquide for the export of hydrogen to Japan and other countries of the Asia-Pacific region, and the use of hydrogen in railway transport in the region.

The goal of Sakhalin State University is to form a scientific and technological agenda and train highly qualified personnel to work in the framework of the Sakhalin Hydrogen Cluster projects. The leadership of the region and the university considers it important that research work on new energy sources can be carried out directly in the region, ensuring the speedy implementation of technologies in practice.

“The task of this laboratory is to create a core of specialists on Sakhalin who will develop projects related to hydrogen energy,” says the acting director. Rector of SakhSU Maria Gatchenkova. “We will bring together young guys who, having gained experience of working with leading industry experts, will be able to successfully solve the problems of the hydrogen cluster.”

The application for selection was submitted jointly by the Central Committee of NTI at the IPCP RAS and SakhSU, the new laboratory will be one of six opened within the framework of a national project in scientific and educational centers of the Far Eastern region. In the near future, an agreement will be signed on the establishment of a laboratory, a working group will be formed and equipping with modern equipment will begin.

Since the subject of the laboratory is new for the region, it is planned to attract graduates of not only Russian, but also foreign universities to work in it. To this end, a program for providing housing for young specialists is being worked out with the regional government, the laboratory staff will be offered competitive salaries and the opportunity to work in close contact with leading international scientific and industrial centers.
