The two Austrians finished tenth overall. The gold medal went to the British Dylan Fletcher / Stuart Bithell.
The sailors Benjamin Bildstein / David Hussl finished the Olympic Games in Tokyo in tenth place in the 49er class. They finished fifth in the medal race on Tuesday, but that was no longer enough to improve the overall result. With a wafer-thin victory in the final, the British pairing Dylan Fletcher / Stuart Bithell won gold, silver went to the New Zealanders Peter Burling / Blair Tuke, bronze to the Germans Erik Heil / Thomas Plößel.
“Not quite perfect”
Bildstein and Hussl ended the 49er competition with mixed feelings: The performance was “partly not quite perfect,” they said on ORF -TV. It would have been better to “go through with decisions once made, you saw that today”, they said. “Fifth place (in the medal race, note) is okay.”
“It was the first Olympic Games for us, so there were definitely many learning opportunities,” the two sailors summed up. “We already have our points and will go into the details.” Nevertheless, the result with a tenth place finish was not quite what we had hoped for: “We were really in a good mood before. We did our best to implement it here is another topic.”
In the lead, an exciting race developed in the last race, in which the British Fletcher / Bithell only caught the favored New Zealanders towards the end. Germany celebrated bronze, not least because the Spaniards only finished seventh in the medal race.
