Sabotage at Bundeswehr and NATO facilities: Germany suspects Russia of involvement

by alex

The German parliament announced the intensification of the hybrid war that Russia is waging in Europe.

Berlin suspects that Russian special services are behind the sabotage at two military facilities in Germany.

This is written by Bloomberg.

The publication notes that the two sites where sabotage was likely carried out are the Bundeswehr base in Cologne-Wahn and the NATO airfield in Geilenkirchen.

According to the German military, someone made a hole in the fence around the base in Cologne at night, but the perpetrators were not found. After that, the warning system at the military base recorded “anomalous values” in the quality of drinking water.

German Armed Forces spokesman Ulrich Vonrobert said at a press conference on Wednesday, August 14, that “the water supply system was attacked” and the water was poisoned. There is no information yet on what substances were found in the water.

NATO spokesman in Geilenkirchen Donny Demmers said that airfield security had prevented an attempt by an unknown person to enter the military facility on Tuesday evening.

“Since we know what happened in Cologne, we have checked our water facilities. No intruders had access to them,” Demmers stressed.

According to Markus Faber, chairman of the defense committee of the lower house of the German parliament, there are “suspicions of sabotage” at another facility in Cologne – the airfield where government planes are based.

“The subsequent investigation will show whether my initial suspicions that Russia is behind this are confirmed,” he noted. Faber.

At the same time, the head of the German parliamentary intelligence committee, Konstantin von Notz, warned of an intensification of Russia's hybrid war after the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Germany is often a target for Russian agents, as it is the second largest military and financial sponsor of Ukraine after the United States.

“Cyber attacks occur almost every day. There are very broad disinformation campaigns that promote the ideas of anti-democratic parties and individuals in Germany, Europe and the United States and that are aimed at dividing society. “There is also espionage and sabotage,” von Notz said.

Let us recall that law enforcement and counterintelligence of the Bundeswehr are investigating possible sabotage at military facilities in Germany. The barracks near the city of Cologne were closed due to the possible poisoning of the water supply. The military was urged not to drink drinking water on the territory of the base under any circumstances.
