Russians began to change gadgets less often

Over the past five years, Russians began to use gadgets one and a half times longer and change them less often, the press service of the MTS company reported, RIA Novosti reports.

So, in 2020, the life of gadgets has increased by 18 percent compared to last year. In 2019, MTS subscribers used devices with an average age of 33 months, in 2018 – 30 months, in 2017 – 28 months. In addition, the number of users who have not changed gadgets for more than three years is growing: in 2015, only 19.2 percent of Russians owned them for more than 36 months; in 2020, their number increased to 48.7 percent.

The number of Russians buying new models every year is also declining. Among MTS subscribers in 2020, only 13 percent replaced gadgets less than one year old, while in 2019 there were 18 percent. At the same time, the share of young people aged 15-25 who update their gadgets every year has hardly changed and is about 20 percent.

MTS analysts associate the increase in the period of ownership of gadgets in Russia with the fact that their technical characteristics make it possible to use all relevant digital services for several years. Therefore, smartphones in their perception have become close to household appliances – they are changed after a breakdown, and not after a new model is released. Company experts predict that the situation will change with the launch of 5G networks and new technologies such as augmented and virtual reality or new games that require a higher performance of the gadget.

Earlier, the head of Hi-Tech Mail.ru Dmitry Ryabinin revealed a way to extend the life of a laptop. He pointed out that the laptop depends on the battery. To protect it from wear and tear, it is important to properly adjust the power consumption and monitor which applications are constantly running in the background. Also, remember that laptop batteries are designed to last a certain number of charge cycles.
