Italy should start producing the Sputnik V vaccine developed in Russia. This proposal was made by Alessio D'Amato, head of health in the central region of the country, the administrative region of Lazio. Reported by Reuters.
Production is proposed to start after Sputnik V is approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). According to D'Amato, he met with scientists from the Russian Institute of Gamalea, which developed the drug. They agreed to collaborate with the infectious diseases hospital in Rome. According to the agency's source, the region has requested one million doses of the vaccine from Russia.
Unlike Lombardy and Piedmont – Italian regions that have been hard-hitting the coronavirus pandemic – in Lazio, the authorities have managed to control the spread of the disease.
On March 4, the EMA began an examination of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine. The European regulator expects the vaccine to be evaluated in a shorter time frame. On the same day it became known that the European Commission allowed the EU member states to purchase Sputnik V on their own.
Hungary and Slovakia have already approved the use of “Sputnik V” on an individual basis, without waiting for the registration of the drug in the EU.
