Russian scientist-developer attempted suicide on Red Square: what was the reason

by alex

The head of a research institute was accused of disrupting a state defense order last year, and now they are trying to bankrupt the enterprise.

An elderly man attempted to set himself on fire on Red Square in Moscow on Friday, July 26, a few meters from the Mausoleum. According to witnesses, the unknown person doused himself with flammable liquid and set himself on fire.

Mash reports this.

“Police officers quickly intervened in the process – they threw the poor guy to the ground and put out the fire. Afterwards, they cordoned off the area. As a result, the man was almost not injured, he is now being interrogated,” the report says.

Later it became known that the head of the Central Research Institute “Volna”, 74-year-old Vladimir Arsenyev, attempted to commit public suicide. The enterprise he heads specializes in the development and manufacture of communications equipment, measuring equipment and testing equipment. One of these developments is used in communication systems on virtually all types of Russian armored vehicles.

Last year, Arsenyev was accused of deliberately disrupting deliveries “for the needs of the SVO” within the framework of the state defense order. The institute was audited, but no violations were found. After that, the head of the research institute went to court to defend his honor and dignity.

At the same time, the Central Research Institute “Volna” has encountered serious financial problems and is actually on the verge of bankruptcy. The Baza channel learned that Arsenyev recently wrote a statement to the Investigative Committee, as well as several appeals to the Ministry of Defense, the FSB and other agencies.

The head of the research institute claims that they are deliberately trying to “destroy” his enterprise and creating obstacles to the fulfillment of defense orders. It is known that the product ordered from the enterprise by the Ministry of Defense fell in price by half in September 2023 for unknown reasons, which makes its further production practically impossible, and the institute itself will soon go bankrupt under such conditions.

“The situation has not been resolved yet, and the man decided to set himself on fire,” writes Baza.

Recall that last year a developer of a hypersonic aircraft was convicted in Russia. According to the court's verdict, he will serve 12 years in prison for “selling secrets.”
