Russian proposals on the situation in Belarus rejected at the UN

The UN Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted a resolution on the situation in Belarus, while rejecting all the amendments proposed by Russia. RIA Novosti writes about it.

The document also calls on the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to start a dialogue with the opposition. Thus, the country's authorities must create conditions for conducting independent, transparent and impartial investigations of all allegations of human rights violations, the document says.

The draft resolution was presented by Germany on behalf of the countries of the European Union. It was supported by 23 member countries of the HRC, two voted against, and 22 abstained.

Russia has proposed 17 amendments. Despite the fact that a number of countries supported them, none were accepted.

Earlier, the Permanent Representative of Belarus at the UN Geneva office, Yuri Ambrazevich, announced that there were no political prisoners in the country. He also said that the Belarusian authorities denied “unconfirmed accusations of sexual violence against the detainees.”

Mass protests have been taking place in Belarus since August 9, demanding the resignation of President Alexander Lukashenko and the holding of new elections. The first actions were violently dispersed, seven thousand people were detained, many of whom reported beating in isolation wards. The media published anonymous testimonies from doctors that girls who were admitted from isolation wards with cervical ruptures and men who were in proctology departments were in hospitals.
