Director of the Moscow Clinical Scientific Center (MKSC) named after AS Loginova, the chief oncologist of Moscow, Professor Igor Khatkov, became an honorary member of the American Association of Surgeons. For the first time in history, this title was awarded to a Russian. Membership in the association is the highest degree of recognition from the leading academic surgical community.

The decision to include Mr. Khatkov was made in June 2020. The Association Council supported it unanimously. On April 15, the decision was officially approved at the general meeting of the organization.

Igor Khatkov is a graduate of the Saratov State Medical Institute, author of over 245 scientific papers and six monographs. Colleagues of Professor Khotkov note that the American Association of Surgeons thus recognized the merits of the Russian specialist in introducing the techniques of so-called low-traumatic approaches into the world surgical practice. He was the first in the Russian Federation to perform laparoscopic pancreatoduodenal resection (removal of part of the pancreas, part of the stomach, duodenum, gallbladder with reconstruction of the digestive tract). Such operations are considered one of the most difficult to perform among laparoscopic interventions.

This nomination shows that high-tech surgery in Russia “is going in the right direction,” said Amiran Revishvili, director of the Vishnevsky National Medical Research Center of Surgery, chief surgeon of the Russian Ministry of Health in a conversation with Kommersant. In addition, Mr. Revishvili sees this as a recognition of the merits of the team of Igor Khatkov – surgeons of the Moscow Clinical Research Center. Ivan Stilidi, director of the Blokhin National Medical Research Center of Oncology, chief freelance oncologist of the Russian Ministry of Health, told Kommersant that Mr. Khatkov combines the “bright qualities” of a leader, a leader and a professional expert. According to Mr. Stilidi, Igor Khatkov “is the conductor of new modern technologies into clinical practice in Russia.”

The American Surgical Association was founded in 1880. It is the oldest and most prestigious surgical organization in the world. It is made up of 99 distinguished surgeons from around the world, as well as presidents of world specialized associations from leading medical institutions. The goal of the association is to raise the status of the surgeon profession and provide a wide platform for demonstrating the latest achievements in the field of surgery.
