Polish President Andrzej Duda said this in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
“We have no doubt that these are Russian provocations when a missile enters our airspace, then turns around and flies to Ukraine,” the Polish leader noted.
By the way, the last incident when a Russian cruise missile entered Polish airspace was recorded on March 24, 2024. Then the enemy object was in the sky of Poland for 39 seconds.
Then the country took its own and allied aviation into the sky. However, NATO forces did not intercept the missiles. According to Duda, such actions could lead to an attack on Polish territory, destruction of infrastructure or loss of life.
“This is the most dangerous situation we can imagine today, because this is a situation in which we can say that Russia started the war,” explained the Polish leader.
Duda also did not answer how Warsaw would react if the Russian missile actually caused casualties in Poland.
“We must try to avoid a situation in which Russia could say that it was provoked by NATO. For now, it is Russia that provokes, and everyone sees it,” the Polish president emphasized.
In addition, members of the Alliance are afraid of shooting down Russian missiles over Ukraine. In their opinion, this means direct intervention in the conflict, which NATO avoids.
Recall that on the night of March 24, during an attack , a Russian missile flew into Polish territory. The object entered Polish space near the city of Ocerdów (Lublin Voivodeship) and stayed there for 39 seconds.
Subsequently, Warsaw reported why the F-16 fighters, which took off at night, did not shoot down the Russian missile. The Ministry of Defense said that aviation could would shoot down the target, provided that it would fly further into the interior of the country.
