Russian military builds first runway in the Arctic

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has built the first runway on the Arctic island of Alexandra Land in the Arkhangelsk region, which is suitable for all types of aircraft. This was announced by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, RIA Novosti reports.

As the head of the defense department specified, construction was completed last year, the length of the runway is 3.5 kilometers. According to Shoigu, strips of this length have not been built in the Russian Arctic before.

In addition, the construction of the Temp airfield on the Novosibirsk Islands archipelago is now being completed, and a military camp is being built in the Yakut village of Tiksi.

At the moment, the development of military infrastructure on the Arctic islands and the coast of the Arctic Ocean continues.

Earlier, the Russian government approved an action plan for the implementation of the Arctic development strategy, which includes 268 events, the bulk of which will be carried out this and next year.

In turn, the Prime Minister of the country Mikhail Mishustin approved a program of state support for the traditional economic activities of indigenous peoples in the Arctic.
