Sergey Naryshkin

On Sunday, June 29, the head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergei Naryshkin announced a telephone conversation with the director of the American intelligence agency (CIA) John Ratcliffe.

He told this to propagandists on Russian state television.

“I had a telephone conversation with my American counterpart, and we agreed to call each other at any time to discuss issues of interest to us,” Naryshkin said, without providing further information.

This information was also published on Sunday by the Russian agency RIA Novosti, which was picked up by the Reuters agency.

The last conversation between the heads of Russian and US intelligence agencies took place in mid-March.

During this conversation, the parties “agreed on regular contacts” between the SVR and the CIA “to help guarantee international stability and security, as well as reduce confrontation in relations between Moscow and Washington.”

The contacts between the heads of the SVR and the CIA come amid a warming of diplomatic relations that began with the return of Donald Trump to the US presidency.

But after years of extreme tension, Moscow and Washington remain at odds. The Americans, for example, continue to provide Kyiv with important information to Ukrainian forces, who have been fighting a massive Russian offensive for more than three years.

Let us recall that after the NATO summit, the US President promised that Russia would never attack the Alliance countries while he was president.
