If Western countries do not unfreeze Afghan accounts, the humanitarian catastrophe that breaks out in the country will take on a global scale. This was stated by Pyotr Ilyichev, Director of the Department of International Organizations of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

He stressed that this should be done in the interests of saving the people of Afghanistan. Ilyichev criticized a number of countries, including the United States, for refusing to help the Afghans because the unblocked accounts will be seized by the Taliban movement that has seized power in the country (banned in the Russian Federation as a terrorist movement).

“Today, against the background of the rapid growth of the risks of the spread of drug and terrorist threats throughout the region and beyond its borders, Afghanistan's financial resources, held in international accounts, are vitally needed to effectively overcome the challenges facing the country,” the diplomat added.
