The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has handed a note of protest to a representative of the US Embassy over the spread of fakes by American digital platforms. This is stated in a statement posted on the website of the Foreign Ministry.

According to the statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted “the large-scale dissemination of inaccurate 'fakes' about Russia by American digital platforms, which systematically replicate provocative content, which is coordinatedly distributed, in turn, by the US Embassy in Moscow.” In this regard, a representative of the American Embassy was summoned to the Foreign Ministry on January 27, he was handed a note of protest with a warning that “the Russian side reserves the right to retaliate.”

On Smolenskaya Square, they believe that the actions taken by the administrations of American social networks in relation to the posted content dealt a blow to the democratic value system and the international information architecture. Therefore, the Foreign Ministry emphasized, “Moscow stands for the formation of international norms for the moderation of content by social networks in connection with the actions of the US IT giants.” The Foreign Ministry pointed to the need to regulate and codify the media sphere.
