Russian cosmonauts will grow plants on an industrial scale on the International Space Station. For this purpose, the Vitacycle-T experiment will be launched in the multipurpose laboratory module “Science”, said Yuri Smirnov, head of the laboratory for the development and implementation of biomedical programs at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
A space greenhouse will be delivered to the ISS, in which astronauts will periodically plant a strip of seeds. Later they spin the drum and re-lay the seed strip. The crop can be harvested in a certain period of time. In particular, it is planned to grow Peking cabbage, TASS reports.
Astronauts will be able to use the resulting plants for food, and part of the harvest will be sent to Earth for research. It is noted that in the future it will be possible to grow cereals and legumes, as well as dwarf tomatoes on the ISS.
As the website kp.ru wrote, on July 29, 2021, the Nauka multipurpose laboratory module successfully docked to the ISS. The station received a new Russian module for the first time in eleven years.
