Russian Oleg Nikitin, convicted of violating US sanctions, went to Russia
Russian Oleg Nikitin, convicted in the United States of conspiracy to violate the sanctions imposed by Washington against Russia on the supply of certain types of equipment, was released from custody and went home. This is reported by TASS with reference to the words of the vice-president of the Russian division of the International Committee for the Protection of Human Rights Ivan Melnikov.
“Russian citizen Oleg Nikitin was released from prison and deported to the Russian Federation from the territory of the United States almost three months after the official decision of the court to end his term of detention and more than two years to serve his sentence,” the human rights activist said.
However, according to Melnikov, the American penitentiary system did not comply with this decision in a timely manner, thereby violating Nikitin's rights. The Russian was placed in a deportation prison. Despite his chronic illnesses, US law enforcement did not provide him with medical assistance during this period. However, Nikitin was released and his way home was secured thanks to the efforts of the Russian Foreign Ministry, human rights activists and the public, Melnikov noted.
Nikitin pleaded guilty in March 2021. According to the Prosecutor's Office for the Southern District of Georgia, the Russian, being the head of the Russian company KS Engineering, through an Italian firm purchased a power turbine in the United States for $ 17 million, which could allegedly be used for deep-sea drilling in the Arctic. At the same time, the sale of such equipment to Russia is prohibited by US sanctions laws.
