Strasbourg police are looking for a driver at the Russian consulate who is accused of selling hundreds of stolen bicycles. This is reported by the Euractiv edition, citing sources familiar with the investigation.
The Russian attracted the attention of law enforcement officers in February. Then an expensive electric bike was stolen from the former deputy mayor of Strasbourg, and a few days later he found an advertisement for its sale on the Leboncoin website. The former official immediately contacted the police, who contacted the seller. He made an appointment at the back door of the Russian consulate.
The man showed four bicycles, the serial number of one of which coincided with the stolen one, and presented a fake receipt for their purchase with the seal of the Russian consulate. The police detained the Russian, confiscated his bicycles and took him for interrogation, but a day later he was released for the duration of the investigation. Soon the driver left for Russia, allegedly due to health problems.
Law enforcement officers later discovered that since January 2020, about 300 ads of expensive bicycles have been posted on the Leboncoin classifieds website, the total value of which can reach 100,000 euros. It is reported that the investigation is still ongoing, but the prosecutor's office may demand that the Russian be convicted in absentia.
