The Russian ship Ursa Major, which was transporting military equipment, sank off the coast of Spain. This happened on December 23 after an explosion in the ship's engine room, causing it to capsize.
This was reported by La Verdad.
The Russian merchant ship Ursa Major sank in international waters between Aguilas and Oran (Algeria). The marine rescue service delivered 14 crew members to the port of Cartagena. In total, there were 16 crew members on the Ursa Major. Two sailors are still missing.
According to the publication's sources, the ship exploded at 12:30 p.m., which prompted the area to be designated as dangerous for shipping until a Russian military vessel arrived to take over the rescue.
Several vessels fishing in the same area took part in the rescue efforts, and were later joined by marine rescue specialists with the ship Clara Campoamor and the Navy patrol boat Serviola.
The captain of the Ursa Major said that the ship was carrying containers that were empty at the time of the accident.
Note that the Russian cargo ship Ursa Major (“Big Dipper”) is one of the of the officially registered watercraft that can transport heavy military equipment.
