The Russian diplomat believes that any such talks should be based on what he called “realities on the ground”.
Moscow is open to talks on ending the war in Ukraine if they are initiated by US President-elect Donald Trump. At the same time, according to the Kremlin, any discussions should be based on the “reality” achieved by Russia during the war.
This was stated by the Russian ambassador to the UN headquarters in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, Reuters reports.
“Trump promised to resolve the Ukrainian crisis overnight. Okay, let him try. But we are realistic people, of course, and we understand that this will never happen,” the Russian diplomat was skeptical about the US president-elect’s capabilities.
Gatilov added that proposals to start a political process are “welcome.”
He also said that any such talks should be based on what he called “the realities on the ground,” apparently referring to the advance of Russian troops in Ukraine, which already controls a fifth of the country.
Ambassador Gatilov said that Trump’s election represents a new opportunity for dialogue with the United States, but he doubts a broader reset of relations and reiterated warnings previously voiced by the Kremlin.
“The American political elite, despite domestic political changes, consistently adheres to the position of limiting Moscow, and this orientation, unfortunately, is deeply rooted, and the change of administration does not change this much. The only possible change is dialogue between our countries, which has been lacking in recent years,” he added.
Recall that the team of newly elected US President Donald Trump has not yet made any inquiries regarding a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
