Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov, in an article for Foreign Policy magazine, called on NATO for urgent security action, noting that the Russian proposals did not pose a threat to the security of the United States or the alliance.
“Urgent action is needed. The principle of equal and indivisible security must be restored, ”the ambassador wrote, noting that this means that no state has the right to strengthen its security at the expense of the security of others.
According to Antonov, if there is political will, this can be easily done through the development of serious long-term legal guarantees of security. He stressed that Moscow wants to be confident in the future, and this requires the obligations of the United States and other NATO countries not to deploy weapons systems that pose a threat to the Russian Federation on the territory of neighboring countries.
The ambassador recalled that the Russian draft agreements on security guarantees have been made public. “This was done to avoid unfair speculation. They do not infringe on the security of the United States and its NATO allies, ”Antonov said, noting that the RF proposals create conditions for defusing tensions in Europe, restoring trust and intensifying interaction to address global challenges.
Earlier Antonov said that Moscow decided to create “vulnerabilities” for the Western countries if they continue the course of creating military threats for the Russian Federation. He stressed that “for Russia, the military development of Ukraine by NATO member states is an existential threat.”
