The Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) helped the government forces of Syria to destroy a group of militants and a cache of weapons of the IS (“Islamic State”, banned in Russia). This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to a representative of the grouping of forces of the Russian Armed Forces in the SAR.
An arms depot was found in the province of Homs, guarded by a group of militants. The group used it “in terrorist activities” in the provinces of Homs and Deir ez-Zor.
“During the operation, four militants were killed in two pickup trucks with large-caliber machine guns, which were found in the area of the cache and were apparently performing a security function,” the spokesman said.
In total, 36 units of assault rifles and light machine guns, seven heavy machine guns, a heavy grenade launcher with 28 grenades, an ATGM installation, 87 mines and grenades were found. In addition, about 40 kilograms of explosives and over 22 thousand ammunition, including those produced by NATO countries, were destroyed. The militants also stored about 45 kilograms of medicines and 350 kilograms of food in the warehouse.
Earlier in the US, they talked about the destruction of Russian weapons in Syria, Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh. Russian-made weapons and equipment have been destroyed in recent years during conflicts using modern unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The Syrian civil war began in March 2011. The main participants in the conflict are government forces supporting President Bashar al-Assad, the so-called moderate opposition and Islamist groups. The opposition is supported by Turkey, Russia is helping the Assad government.
