“Russia will start hostilities in Moldova”: the historian explained when and how the attack could happen

Despite the unfinished war in Ukraine, the Russian Federation may start military operations in Moldova.

The dictator of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has not overlooked any of his goals and plans this year. The Russian army still has the task of capturing Moldova , so sooner or later Russia will start hostilities in this country.

This opinion was expressed by Russian-American historian Yuri Felshtinsky in an interview with UNIAN.

“The reality is that sooner or later Russia will start hostilities in Moldova. Despite the unfinished war in Ukraine and despite the fact that they cannot break through the land corridors, although they tried to do it from the south through Odessa,” the expert believes.

According to him, the military operation in Moldova is extremely problematic and risky for the Russians until they break through the land corridor. The historian assures that the Russian troops in Transnistria cannot independently conduct military operations, even against the Moldovan army.

“I guarantee that the Russian troops will leave Pridnestrovie as a result of this war. After all the problems that the Russia of the world caused in 2014, and especially in 2022, no one will have the thought of leaving them there. And so, Pridnestrovie will certainly become a normal part of Moldova. Now Transnistria is a territory frozen in 1991 in the Soviet Union. There are red flags, hammers and sickles, monuments to Lenin … This is one of the reasons why Putin has a great desire to break through there. His general, the ideological task is to drive the Russian Federation back into the Soviet Union, and he does it through these occupied territories, including the L/DPR,” Felshtinsky explains.

In his opinion, Transnistria for Putin is “a very important point that the dictator has not yet received.”

What is happening in Moldova

The Ukrainian authorities handed over to Moldovan President Mai Sandu information about the plans of the Russian Federation to carry out a coup d'état in Chisinau. The Russians intended to seize the airport in Chisinau and transfer troops to Moldova. The landing of the invaders in Moldova was supposed to be supported by the Russian military contingent in Transnistria.

According to Sandu, the purpose of these actions is to overthrow the constitutional and legitimate authorities in Chisinau to illegitimate, pro-Russian ones, “so that Russia can stop the process of European integration of the republic and use Moldova in the war against Ukraine.”

After that, the new Prime Minister of Moldova, Dorin Recean, stressed that Transnistria must be demilitarized and the Russian occupation contingent should be expelled from there. Recean warned that there are “real threats of escalation of either military or hybrid operations” in Moldova.

President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky announced his readiness to help Moldova with Transnistria if there is a threat to the territorial integrity of Ukraine itself.

Zelensky also spoke about evidence that the Russian Federation was planning a coup in Moldova . According to him, this can be done only with the help of landing troops or using the territory of Pridnestrovie.

US President Joe Biden expressed support for Moldova and its “free people” in Warsaw.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, in turn, has traditionally accused Ukraine of preparing an “attack” on Transnistria .

At the same time, military expert Denis Popovich is convinced that it would be extremely difficult for the Russians to organize an offensive from Transnistria, since their contingent does not have heavy equipment, and it is still impossible for the invaders to transfer it to the unrecognized enclave.

Military-political observer Alexander Kovalenko believes that now the Russians may be in the process of accumulating ammunition to deliver a massive blow to Moldova .
