Hungary to receive 8.5 billion cubic meters of Russian gas next year.
The Hungarian government has signed a new contract with Russia's Gazprom for long-term gas supplies at a “competitive price.” This happened almost immediately after Hungary blocked the EU's decision to provide assistance to Ukraine.
The new agreement with the Russian gas monopoly was announced by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto at a gas forum in St. Petersburg, Reuters reports.
According to him, in 2025 Hungary will receive 8.5 billion cubic meters of Russian gas through the Turkish Stream.
“This year, the volume of supplies via the Turkish Stream already exceeds 5.7 billion cubic meters, which is more than for the whole of last year. In total, by the end of 2024, Hungary will receive 6.7 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia,” he said. Szijjártó.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán remains the only European leader to maintain relations with Vladimir Putin since the outbreak of war in Ukraine. In July, he announced his “peace mission” and visited Kyiv, Moscow and Beijing, where he met with Volodymyr Zelensky, Putin and Xi Jinping.
Hungary has repeatedly blocked EU aid to Ukraine. In May, it blocked the allocation of 6.5 billion euros ($7.1 billion) in support for Kyiv, and in July it imposed another veto on the financing of arms supplies to the Ukrainian Armed Forces through the European Peace Fund.
Recall that on October 8, Hungary prevented the EU from moving to freeze Russian assets for three years instead of the current six-month extension, which put a 35 billion euro loan to Ukraine at risk.
