It became known that the Russian nuclear space tug “Zeus” can be used for the anti-missile and air defense of the country. She will track aircraft and indicate targets for weapons.
According to RIA Novosti, the nuclear tug will be able to illuminate air targets from orbit. In addition, it will be able to transmit data on sighted objects to air defense systems.
Zeus will be able to cover an area with a radius of 2200 to 4300 kilometers. At the maximum value, its coverage area will include the entire airspace of Russia and even part of the space of states nearby.
The journalists recalled that the creation of elements of a nuclear tug has been underway in Russia since 2010. Zeus operates on the basis of a megawatt class nuclear power plant. In 2019, a model of a tugboat was shown for the first time.
Zeus is scheduled to be launched into orbit for testing in 2030. Earlier it was reported that the nuclear tug will be designed for flights to the moon and planets.
