Russia Threatens Moldova to “Be Drawn into Conflict” Over Ukrainian F-16s

The press secretary of the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that a “militarization process” is taking place in Moldova.

On Friday, September 20, the Russian Foreign Ministry appealed to the Republic of Moldova with a demand not to interfere “in the conflict in Ukraine.” The warning concerns information about the alleged deployment of some F-16 aircraft at the Marculesti airbase, which are intended for Ukraine.

This was reported by the Romanian publication Digi24 with reference to the EFE and TASS agencies.

“We once again persistently ask Chisinau to refrain from ill-considered steps that could turn the Republic of Moldova into a party to the conflict in Ukraine,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova at a press conference.

According to her, the Russians have information about Romania's plans to send a mobile maintenance station for F-16 fighters to Moldova with the aim of subsequently deploying them at the airfield Marculesti.

“This is new confirmation that Chisinau is preparing the ground for providing the infrastructure of the Moldovan airport to receive aircraft transferred by the West for the needs of the Ukrainian army,” Zakharova continued.

A representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry said that a “militarization process” is taking place in Moldova and blamed Germany, France, Poland and the Baltic countries for this.

Zakharova threatened the Chisinau authorities led by pro-European President Maia Sandu that “irresponsible games” could have “tragic consequences that harm security.”

Reports about the alleged deployment of F-16 aircraft intended for Ukraine in the Republic of Moldova appeared back in August, when Chisinau denied them and accused Moscow in response to “fake news on the Internet”.

Marculesti Airfield is an airbase located in the northern part of the Republic of Moldova.

Recall that Ukrainian pilots began training on the F-16 in Romania.
