Russia is considering the possibility of breaking diplomatic relations with Bulgaria if it cancels the decision to expel 70 employees of Russian diplomatic missions.
Russian Ambassador to Bulgaria Eleonora Mitrofanova said on Thursday, June 30, on the air of the Bulgarian TV channel BNT.
“Moscow will take very drastic steps. This (expulsion – ed.) cannot go unnoticed,” she commented on Russia's response to the expulsion of diplomats.
To clarify what was at stake, Mitrofanova said: “Diplomatic relations can be broken s! Moscow will make a decision.”
In addition, Bulgarian media reported on Thursday that Russia had sent a note to Bulgaria demanding that it cancel the decision to expel Russian diplomats on suspicion of espionage. Later, the existence of such an appeal was confirmed by the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry.
The note states that the decision must be reviewed before noon on July 1, otherwise “the question of closing the embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Bulgaria will be immediately raised before the Russian leadership.”
The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry conveyed note from the office of the prime minister and awaits further action.
Recall that the resigned Prime Minister of Bulgaria Kirill Petkov said that 70 diplomats of the Russian Embassy in Bulgaria will be recalled and return to Moscow.< /p>
