Russia's Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) has stopped reporting the number of deaths in the country, likely part of the Kremlin's efforts to conceal its losses in the war in Ukraine.
The information is not being disclosed even to local researchers. This is stated in the ISW report of July 6, 24 Kanal reports.
What is known about statistics
The Institute for the Study of War drew attention to a report by an opposition Russian publication on July 5 that Rosstat did not report demographic data in its report “The Socio-Economic Situation in Russia” for January–May 2025.
In addition, local electoral statistics researcher Dmitry Kobak said in late June that the state service refused to fulfill his request for data on excess mortality among men for 2024 and monthly mortality by date of death.
By the way, ISW has previously written that Rosstat is hiding population data, trying to hide Russia’s current demographic problems.
The absence of demographic data in Rosstat reports is probably also intended to hide the high figures for losses of personnel in the Russian army, analysts write.
Let us recall that according to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrsky, in the first half of 2025 alone, the Ukrainian Defense Forces neutralized more than 230 thousand Russian occupiers, 1,311 tanks and 2,885 armored vehicles of the enemy.
