The Russian Foreign Ministry spoke about the transfer of foreign fighters to Nagorno-Karabakh. The statement, published on the website of the department, expressed concern over what is happening.

Russian diplomats confirmed that they are aware of the participation of terrorists from illegal armed groups in Syria and Libya in the Karabakh conflict. The ministry called on the governments of interested countries to prevent the participation of militants in the clash between Armenia and Azerbaijan

“We are deeply concerned about these processes, which lead not only to an even greater escalation of tension in the conflict zone, but also create long-term threats to the security of all countries in the region,” the publication said.

Earlier, the Arab branch of the BBC TV channel reported that it got in touch with the commander of the pro-Turkish group “Syrian National Army”. He said that his detachment was offered a job to protect facilities in Karabakh, but in the end the Syrians participated in hostilities against the Armenian armed forces.

The fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) began on September 27. Baku stated that the Armenians fired at Azerbaijani positions and settlements and launched a counteroffensive. Armenia claims that Azerbaijan attacked the unrecognized republic, thousands of militants from Syria, who were transferred by Turkey, are fighting on its side.

In 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh, the majority of whose population were Armenians, declared independence from Azerbaijan. Baku tried to return the region by force, a war broke out. In 1994, Azerbaijan, Armenia and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, with the mediation of Russia, signed a truce protocol. However, hostilities periodically resume.
