Russia resumes combat capabilities: NATO general declares threat to Baltic countries

The general agreed with the opinion that the Russian Federation is mobilizing its resources against the North Atlantic Alliance.

Despite the war against Ukraine, Russia has begun to rebuild its combat capabilities, posing an increased threat to the Baltic region.

This statement was made by the commander of the multinational NATO Northeast Corps, Lieutenant General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart, in an interview with LRT.

“Russia is now largely devoted to its illegal war against Ukraine, but it has already begun and will continue to restore its potential separately from the war in Ukraine. And this poses an increased threat to the Baltic Sea region,” a senior Alliance official emphasized.

He agreed with the opinion of Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, who said that the Russian Federation was mobilizing its resources against NATO.

“But we have to be very careful with the conclusions that we draw from this. I think that the conclusions that have been translated into procurement actions and strengthening the capabilities of the Lithuanian armed forces are very wise and go in the right direction,” von Sandrart said.

He also noted that it would be wrong to assume that it is possible to defend against Russia only through the purchase of drones and air defense systems.

“Combined land, sea, air, cyber and soft forces… will still define the battlefield,” the lieutenant general added.

Let us recall that Latvian President Edgars Rinkevich said that if the Russians consider that they have won the war against Ukraine, they may be “tempted to test NATO’s strength.” This is how the politician commented on information about the Russian Federation’s plans to prepare for aggression against the Baltic countries.
