Moscow. October 15th. INTERFAX.RU – Russia retained the fourth place in the top five countries in terms of the amount of content removed from TikTok for violating the platform's rules in the second quarter of 2021.

4 million 759 thousand 623 videos were removed, which, as the press service of the company specified, is 27% more than in the first quarter of 2020.

The composition and distribution of places in the top five leading countries in terms of the number of removals remains: the United States is in first place with 11.43 million videos, Pakistan is second (9.85 million), Brazil is third (7.49 million), and fifth is – Indonesia (4.74 million).

In total, 81 million 518 thousand 334 videos were deleted on the platform in April-June for violating community rules or user agreement, which, according to the company, is less than 1% of all videos uploaded to TikTok. In January-March, TikTok deleted more than 61.95 million videos. Thus, the number of deleted videos on the platform increased by more than 30% from quarter to quarter.

“Of these videos, we identified and removed 93.0% within 24 hours of being posted, and 94.1% before the user complained about them. 87.5% of the removed content had zero views, and this the figure increased from the first quarter of this year (81.8%) as a result of improvements in detection systems, “the company said in a report.

It is noted that TikTok continues to introduce technology in new markets that automatically detects and removes certain categories of content that violates the rules, with the help of this technology, 17 million of the total number of deletions have already been made.

TikTok provides an opportunity to appeal the decision and restore the erroneously deleted content, and in the second quarter of this year, after the appeal was filed, 4.66 million videos were restored.

“We've added a new feature for live broadcasts – 'Silent Mode', which allows you to turn off comments during broadcasts. Now the host or proxy can temporarily restrict the ability of an unfriendly viewer to leave comments. This tool is another step towards creating a safe and friendly atmosphere on the platform, “the press service of the company said.

As part of the fight against hate speech on the platform, harassment and bullying in the second quarter of 2021, 73.3% of such videos were removed even before complaints about them appeared, while in the first quarter there were 66.2% of such videos. “We also removed 72.9% of videos showing hateful behavior, which is more than the same indicator in the first quarter of 2021 – 67.3%,” the press service said.
