“Russia-related hackers” suddenly disappeared from the darknet

All sites on the darknet that were related to the “Russia-related” hacker group REvil were suddenly shut down. Writes about this The New York Times.

According to the publication, access to the portals was lost on Tuesday, July 13, at about 1 am US East Coast time (8:00 Moscow time).

In particular, the group's blog, which spoke about the victims of attacks and the proceeds from Internet extortion, disappeared, as well as the sites through which REvil negotiated with the attacked companies and received payments. As a result, some affected organizations are unable to negotiate with hackers and regain access to their systems.

REvil, also known as Sodinokibi, is a group that carries out cyberattacks on various companies using programs that encrypt their data, and then demands a ransom to return access to them.

On July 9, a telephone conversation took place between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Joe Biden. During it, the US President called on Putin to act more decisively in the fight against hacker groups and stressed that Washington is ready to take all necessary measures to protect its people and critical infrastructure in this matter.

The presidents agreed on Russian-American consultations on cybersecurity at their first bilateral meeting. It took place on June 16 in Geneva at the Villa La Grange. Biden then offered Putin to help deal with hackers inside the country. He also handed over to the Russian president a list of sectors prohibited from cyberattacks. The US President added that during the negotiations, Washington did not threaten Moscow with a military response to the cyberattacks.
