Russia recognizes former prime minister as a “foreign agent”

by alex

The former head of the Russian government was accused of “discrediting the foreign and domestic policies of the Russian Federation.”

On Friday, November 24, the Russian Ministry of Justice added former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov to the register of “foreign agents.” He was accused of “discrediting the foreign and domestic policies of the Russian Federation” and speaking out against military actions in Ukraine.

This was reported on the official website of the department.

“MM. Kasyanov participated in the creation and dissemination of messages and materials of foreign agents to an unlimited circle of people, disseminated false information about the decisions taken by public authorities of the Russian Federation and the policies pursued by them. He opposed the special military operation [as the war is called in Russia] in Ukraine, participated as a respondent on information platforms provided by foreign structures,” the “sins” of the former Russian prime minister are listed in the official statement.

Kasyanova is also reproached for membership in the “Anti-War Committee of Russia” – an association that, according to the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation, “is aimed at discrediting the foreign and domestic policies of the Russian Federation.”

Who is Kasyanov

Mikhail Kasyanov served as Prime Minister of the Russian Federation from May 2000 to February 2004. In 2017, Forbes named Kasyanov one of the most effective prime ministers in the history of modern Russia.

Since 2005, he has been in opposition to the current government in the Kremlin. In 2010, he, together with oppositionists Boris Nemtsov, Vladimir Ryzhkov and Vladimir Milov, created the coalition “For Russia without arbitrariness and corruption,” which later turned into the “People's Freedom Party” (PARNAS). In May 2023, this party was liquidated by a decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation.

Since June 2022, Mikhail Kasyanov has been living abroad.

Let us recall that at the beginning of 2023, the State Duma of the Russian Federation proposed to grant the status of a foreign agent to the Ukrainian writer, translator and cultural figure Lesya Ukrainka, as well as to demolish all her monuments.
