The maximum number of COVID-19 infections at the peak of the omicron in Russia will exceed 100,000 per day, says Alexander Chepurnov, head of the laboratory for especially dangerous infections at the Center for Fundamental Translational Medicine. He told Lente.ru about this.
According to the forecast of researchers from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington Medical School (IHME), statistics at the peak of omicron incidence in Russia will increase to 85,700 per day.
The virologist believes that the figures will be much higher. “The incidence in all countries affected to date is three to four times higher for this strain. We had a maximum of 40 thousand in the delta, we multiply by three times and we get more than 100 thousand per day, ”Chepurnov suggested. He also noted that the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova called a similar figure based on data from other countries.
Also, according to IHME, the peak incidence of omicron in Russia will come on January 22. However, according to Chepurnov, it will take place in February 2022.
