Russian submarines likely have the ability to reach very deep sections of cables and disrupt their operation.

Russian Federation began explore the underwater infrastructure of the Atlantic Ocean, threatening the global cable network that carries almost all of the Internet and financial traffic.

This is stated in the publication of Bloomberg.

The publication, citing a report published earlier this week by the Policy Exchange in Britain, calls the complex of undersea cables that provide global communications a vulnerable “Achilles heel”. Its damage threatens global trade, military readiness and logistics, as well as the Internet itself.

This report states that more than $10 trillion in financial transactions, commercial payments, and trade transactions occur every day worldwide. More than 95% of the world's communications are carried out by a network of approximately 500 cables laid across the seven seas. explore the underwater infrastructure of the Atlantic Ocean as a weak point.

Russian submarines in particular likely have the ability to reach very deep cable sections and disrupt their operation. The option of destroying them or connecting to them for the purpose of data manipulation is being considered.

The publication notes the need to improve cable protection technologies.

“Both offensively and defensively, we need to invest in seabed warfare. This means improving our own undersea systems, including nuclear submarines and new classes of underwater unmanned vehicles capable of countering enemy ships.” — writes Bloomberg.

Recall that the US intelligence community considers the creation in Russia of means capable of destroying satellites in low-Earth orbit a threat to national security.
