The strike by the United States on targets in Syria has affected the disruption of informal talks with Iran. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov pointed out the connection between the two events, TASS reports.
Ryabkov noted that the United States launched an air strike on Syrian territory at the time of intensive elaboration of such a meeting between the American and Iranian delegations. “There is no doubt that influential forces in Washington have taken steps to disrupt this event,” the diplomat stressed.
Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran had rejected a proposal from the European Union to organize direct negotiations on a nuclear deal with the United States. According to Western diplomats, first Iran wants to get guarantees that the United States will lift some of the sanctions after the meeting. The White House greeted Iran's refusal to negotiate with disappointment.
The US military launched airstrikes on Syrian territory on the night of February 26. The order for the attack was given by US President Joe Biden. The goal of the US military was the infrastructure of the Iranian-backed militia. The airstrike killed at least 17 people. The Pentagon explained that the strikes were in response to recent attacks against representatives of the United States and the coalition in Iraq.
