The R&D Institute for Chemical Engineering plans to start developing a washing machine, dishwasher and shower for space applications from 2022.
NIIkhimmash creates closed life support systems for space technology. The ISS has a system for regenerating water from atmospheric moisture condensate, a system for receiving and preserving urine, a system for purifying harmful micro-impurities and other developments.
The plans of the institute are announced in the decision of the scientific and technical council, RIA Novosti reports. The meeting discussed the issue of developing a complex of sanitary and hygienic provision. It should include “equipment for carrying out water procedures and washing (washing the face, body and head, washing and sanitizing clothes, possibly a device for washing dishes and accessories)”.
Variants of “dry” and “wet” washing of linen are considered – using carbon dioxide and water. It is assumed that the washing machine can be used on a space station or lunar base.
