Russia May Send Troops to Georgia Amid Protests: Diplomat Names Conditions

A repeat of 2008 is possible in this situation.

In 7-10 days it will become clear whether Georgian society will be able to withstand pro-Russian authorities.

This opinion was expressed on air by Espresso diplomat, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (2007-2009), head of the Center for Russian Studies Vladimir Ohryzko.

“Whether Georgian society has enough strength, I think, will be shown in the next 7-10 days. If it goes down the path that is currently being followed, that on the one hand there will be brutal beatings and dispersal of demonstrations. And on the other hand, new detachments will be formed each time, and each time there will be a tightening of protests, it seems to me that the Georgian government will not withstand,” he said.

However, in this case, Russia may directly intervene in the situation in order to keep Georgia under control.

“But in this situation there could be a repeat of 2008, when, despite everything, some airborne division will fall on Tbilisi, which will seize key centers and establish a de facto occupation power and that's it,” the diplomat noted.

Recall that it was previously reported that Ukraine is preparing sanctions against the Georgian authorities.

In addition, we previously reported that searches and brutal detentions of opposition leaders have begun in Georgia.
