Russia is suing Google, Facebook and Twitter

Russian regulators have sued five international internet platforms for disseminating calls for banned rallies by government critics. The US companies Twitter, Google and Facebook are accused of not having deleted the appeals, the Interfax news agency reported on Tuesday. The companies faced fines of four million rubles (45,151.82 euros).

Proceedings have also been opened against the short message service Telegram and the Tiktok video portal. The legal steps were initiated after nationwide protests against the sentencing of the Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny to a sentence of several years. Nawalny's supporters had called for rallies that had been banned by the authorities. While Google declined to comment, none was initially available from Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok and Telegram.
