Some Russian politicians at the end of 2023 stated about the need to restore the Soviet counterintelligence unit SMERSH in Russia. However, already in early January 2024, an image of Russian operatives wearing the stripes of this organization appeared in open sources.
This is stated in the daily report of the British Ministry of Defense.
As intelligence officials noted, it is not yet clear whether the new name signifies any significantly new powers or role for Russian counterintelligence, or whether it is simply a name change.
“However, this is another example of how the Russian authorities are deliberately pushing the limits of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in the spirit of World War II and how they are focusing on the alleged penetration of external threats into the Russian Federation,” the message says .
The unit's name is an acronym for the Russian phrase “death to spies.” The unit, which was founded by USSR dictator Joseph Stalin, existed from 1941-1946
