The Russian Embassy in Washington has invited the US authorities to consider an arms control initiative by Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is stated in the message of the diplomatic mission in the Twitter account.
The embassy noted that the president's proposal provides for “compromise approaches for the benefit of all countries.” “We offer our American partners to pay serious attention to them,” it was reported.
On October 26, Putin proposed a new idea for resolving the situation with growing tensions in Europe after the US withdrawal from the treaty on the deployment of intermediate and shorter-range missiles (INF). The Russian leader proposed checking the 9M729 missiles in the Kaliningrad region and the Aegis Ashore complexes with Mk-41 launchers at US and NATO bases in Europe for compliance with the INF parameters.
Germany was one of the first to react to the initiative and referred to the previous position of the North Atlantic Alliance that Russian ideas on the INF Treaty were not credible.
The missile Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF Treaty) was officially terminated on August 2. Washington tore up the agreement, allegedly due to violations of its terms by the Russian side. The agreement was signed by Moscow and Washington in December 1987.
