Russia has learned to predict the severity of COVID-19

Scientists from the Russian Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) have developed algorithms capable of predicting the severity of the course of coronavirus infection with 90 percent accuracy. TASS reports.

The researchers studied a sample of nearly 7,000 patients who had experienced asymptomatic, mild, moderate and severe COVID-19. This made it possible to create mathematical models of the outcome of the disease based on machine learning algorithms.

The clinical factors that were taken into account in the analysis were ferritin, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, respiratory rate, and others. Also, scientists were interested in the relationship between the severity of the disease and the genetic map of patients.

Earlier, FMBA concluded that the likelihood of death increases with age, gender, body mass index and glucose levels.

On December 15, the official representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Russia Melita Vuinovich spoke about the phenomenon of low mortality rates in the country against the background of a large number of infected people. She noted that Russia ranks fourth in the world in the number of detected cases of infection, but thanks to the good work of the health care system, a relatively low mortality rate is observed. A similar situation is developing in Germany and in some other countries.

As of December 15, there are 2,707,945 cases of coronavirus infection in Russia. For the entire time of the epidemic, 47 968 infected people died.
