The Russian government is actively introducing measures to attract migrants and new citizens to the armed forces.
The Russian government continues to introduce legislative changes to use migrants and new citizens to replenish the military ranks of the army.
This is written by Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin has proposed an initiative to deputies that would require newly naturalized Russian citizens to register for military service after receiving a passport. In addition, amendments are planned to be considered that would increase the length of military service for new citizens from one to two years and raise the draft age.
Analysts report that Russian authorities are illegally depriving people of food and water, using physical violence to force them to sign a contract with the Russian Armed Forces. ISW recalled information from the Russian opposition publication Okno, most of the detained migrants agree to participate in the war against Ukraine after promises and threats.
It is also noted that the Russian authorities threaten to deprive naturalized citizens of their Russian passports and promise migrants citizenship in exchange for military service. This has become more common after the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall in March 2024. The government is also taking legislative measures to attract migrants to the army, including mandatory registration for military service and a possible extension of the service period to 2 years.
Recall that Russia has begun sending new citizens to war in Ukraine. Of the 30,000 migrants who recently received Russian citizenship, 10,000 have already been sent to the front.
