The encyclopedic portal “Great Russian Encyclopedia” will appear in Russia. The authorities will allocate 750 million rubles for the creation of an analogue of Wikipedia. This is stated in the explanatory note to the draft budget for 2022 and the planning period of 2023-2024, which is at the disposal of the “Parlamentskaya Gazeta”. The operator of the project was the national scientific and educational center “Big Russian Encyclopedia” (ANO BRE).
They noted that the beta version of the interactive encyclopedia will appear in the spring of 2022. Today, a large team of scientists is working on the development of the portal. The scientific editorial board includes more than 350 scientists, divided into 20 scientific modules, Ksenia Korotkova, director for interaction with authorities and public organizations of ANO BRE, told the publication.
According to her, the main task of the editorial office is to prepare author's articles and saturate them with additional multimedia materials. This is exactly what distinguishes the Russian project from open encyclopedias.
“And unlike Wikipedia, where no one is responsible for anything, editors will bear equal responsibility along with the authors for information posted on the national encyclopedic portal,” she said.
Elena Bibikova, Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy, agrees with the expert. The encyclopedic resource being created will be of great importance for compatriots, if only because the information here will be reliable, she assured. “The value of verified information is growing today, especially for the younger generation, who will be able to navigate cyberspace without stumbling over all sorts of fakes,” the senator clarified in an interview with Parlamentskaya Gazeta.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested creating an analogue of Wikipedia in Russia. According to the head of state, the encyclopedia should become a source of “reliable information, offered in a good modern form.”
The Secret wrote that Wikipedia creator Larry Sanger criticized the online encyclopedia for censoring because leftist volunteers cut out any passages from articles that didn't fit their agenda. As an example of censorship on Wikipedia, he cited an article about US President Joe Biden. Larry Sanger pointed out that now “Wikipedia” resembles many media structures that, on any controversial issue, cover only one, “the only true” version of the truth. He added that the Internet encyclopedia was not like this before.
Sanger came up with the very name of the project in 2001 – “Wikipedia”, and also formulated the main part of the policy, principles and rules of the resource. He stopped working as editor-in-chief of Wikipedia in March 2002, claiming then that he was working on the project part-time and without pay.
