Russia continues to ship more than a billion dollars worth of goods to the US every month. So, despite the sanctions imposed against the Russian Federation for the war against Ukraine, trade in certain goods continues.
Thus, since the end of February, more than 3,600 shipments of wood, metals, rubber and other goods have arrived from Russia to the United States . This is almost half as compared to the same period last year.
AP reports.
Most of all, the Russian Federation imports the following goods to the United States: wood (1294 parties), metals (909 parties), food (341), oil and gas (209), rubber (179), fertilizers (102), spare parts (67), radioactive materials and ammunition (47 each).
It is impossible to completely block trade with the Russian Federation, because this could negatively affect world trade, said Jim O' Brian. In addition, in some cases, such sanctions would harm the United States more than the aggressor country.
The publication indicated one more reason – contradiction with the sanctions of the UK and the European Union, inresulting in confusion. This is because the UK, EU countries and the US publish separate lists of sanctions. It turns out that at least one Russian company supplying metal to the Russian defense industry is still trading with American and European firms.
The material also says that the administration of US President Joe Biden even encourages buying. First of all, we are talking about chemical fertilizers, of which more than 100 shipments have arrived since the beginning of the war.
As for energy resources, they are still being shipped from Russia to the United States due to the fact that some companies were allowed to complete existing contracts before abandoning the energy of the aggressor country.
In addition, It is sometimes difficult for US Customs to determine the country of origin of a product. For example, American companies continue to import oil from Kazakhstan through Russian ports, even if it is mixed with Russian. At the same time, many companies in the US decide to refuse goods from the Russian Federation.
The authors of the article note that bilateral trade between the US and Russia has never been great. So, export bans by the United States, primarily technological ones, as well as the freezing of assets of the Russian central bank in the West, have a greater impact.
Recall that Russia earns hundreds of millions of dollars every month by selling diamonds abroad, avoiding sanctions.
